Int'l patent applications filed in South Korea increase despite economic stagnation

Due to the stagnation of the global economy, the number of domestic applications for intellectual properties decreased last year. In contrast, the number of international applications for patents and trademarks filed in South Korea increased, as South Korean enterprises actively advanced to foreign markets and expectations for a recovery increased.
According to preliminary estimates by the South Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO, Commissioner: Jung-Sik Koh), the number of applications filed for domestic patents was 156,885 last year, a 8.1% decrease from 2008’s 170,632.
However, the number of international patent applications filed through the PCT system in 2009 was 8,026, a 1.4% increase compared to 2008’s 7,913. As the number of PCT international applications in major advanced countries (such as the US) is expected to decrease due to the stagnation, the increase in South Korea can be construed as a bright forecast for technological competitiveness of South Korean enterprises in overseas regions.
Looking at the applicants for international patent applications, companies and research labs filed 6,274 applications (78.2%), while individuals filed 1,752 applications (21.8%). Among companies and research labs, LG Electronics filed the greatest number of applications (1,093), followed by Samsung Electronics (534), and the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (184).
Meanwhile, as Korean is included as the official languages of publication for international application starting 2009, South Korean applications took up 72.3%, about a 10% increase compared to 2008’s 63.0%.
The number of PCT international search requested by foreign applicants to KIPO also continued to increase, indicating that the export of South Korean examination service is actively taking place.
In 2009, the number of PCT international search requested by foreign applicants to KIPO was 13,978, a 20.0% increase compared to 11,653 in 2008. The majority (95.6%) of the requests were made by American enterprises (such as Hewlett-Packard, Microsoft, 3M, etc), showing that advanced countries recognize the quality of KIPO’s examination.
Regarding ’Madrid international applications,’ an international application system for trademarks, the number of international applications filed by Koreans in 2009 increased drastically compared to 2008.
In 2008, the number of applications was only 216, a 23.7% decrease compared to 2007. However, in 2009, the number increased 30.6% to 282. The number of Korean applicants selecting overseas countries also increased 10.4% from 1,581 in 2008 to 2,043 in 2009.
Looking at the details of Madrid international applications, the overseas countries preferred for selection by the Korean applicants in 2009 were China (210), the US (192), and Japan (158). Meanwhile, industrial fields such as information & communications devices (11.1%), clothing (10.9%), bags & wallets (7.7%), electric power & machine tools (5.2%), etc actively filed for Madrid international applications.
In contrast, the number of international applications filed by foreigners to South Korea through the Madrid system in 2009 decreased by 19.7% (from 9,745 in 2008 to 7,824 in 2009) due to the stagnation of the global economy.
Looking at the nationality of foreign applicants, German (1,216), American (1,153), and Japanese (715) filed the majority of applications to Korea. Meanwhile, companies such as Shimano (Japan, Sports & leisure - 71 applications), Novartis (Switzerland, Medicine & medical supplies - 62 applications), and Sanofi-Aventis (France, Medicine & medical supplies - 51 applications) actively filed for applications.
Director Chang-Ryong Kim of the International Cooperation and Customer Support Bureau commented, "Although the number of domestic applications for intellectual properties is currently decreasing, the number of international applications for intellectual properties continues to rise. The increase shows that Korean companies are putting efforts to preoccupy new technologies and brands in today’s competitive global market. KIPO will work multilaterally to help South Korean companies obtain intellectual property rights more effectively in overseas regions."
