It’s equally important to be clear about the kind of manufacturer you need to locate. As you vet prospective exporters, you’ll need to confirm that they have the level of manufacturing capabilities necessary to meet your requirements. Check their operational and economic stability, too, so that your own operations aren’t harmed by your exporter’s or importers volatility. And make sure the manufacturer you select has export and import experience.
Smith points out that as a new player on the import and export side, you can’t afford to be put in the position of having to educate your exporter or importer about his obligations in the trade transaction.
In addition to those concerns on the supply side, you need to analyze marketing and sales strategies for the new imported and exported goods you’re adding to your product line.
Make sure, in particular, that the product meets your price parameters. “There are a lot of hidden costs that you may not initially recognize to get the process up and running,” Smith says. You may have to travel to the exporter’s or importer's country more often than you’d anticipated, invest more than you’d budgeted in ensuring that the manufacturer’s quality control procedures are up to your standards, or discover that documentation requirements are more complicated and time consuming than you’d planned.
